Creating healthy communities.

Partners

The Lake County Community Action team is a working relationship of partners from several service providers or informal support persons that are helpful for the families we work with in Lake County, Indiana. This team may share the same clients so the agencies work together productively. The team share a common vision, mission, goals and values and has a genuine interest in and commitment to the community.

Infant Safe Sleep

Until their first birthday, babies should sleep on their backs for all sleep times—for naps and at night. Safe sleep means putting your baby to sleep in ways that can help protect him from dangers, like choking and suffocation, and sudden infant death syndrome (also called SIDS). Learning about SIDS and safe sleep for babies is important for all caregivers, not just for parents. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, babysitters, childcare providers, and anyone else who might care for babies should learn more. Simple actions can make a big difference.

Car Seat Installation and Training

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute manages a network of Child Safety Seat Inspection Stations. Child Safety Seat Inspection Stations are places where parents and caregivers can make an appointment to have their child safety seat inspected by a certified child passenger safety technician.  The certified child passenger safety technician will evaluate the way that the child is currently traveling, check the child’s current restraint for recalls, proper fit and proper installation.  The parent or caregiver is instructed on how to properly use and install the child restraint.

Breastfeeding Educational Support

Breastfeeding is when you feed your baby breast milk, usually directly from your breast. It’s also called nursing. Making the decision to breastfeed is a personal matter. Many medical experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, strongly recommend breastfeeding exclusively (no formula, juice, or water) for 6 months. After the introduction of other foods, it recommends continuing to breastfeed through the baby’s first year of life

Smoke Cessation

SMOKING CAUSES CANCER, HEART DISEASE, AND OTHER MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEMS.

Women who smoke may find it harder to get pregnant, and women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have a miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, infant death and other birth defects.
